Lily and The Magic Comb is the latest book to come out of Woke Kidz Books publishers. The book is beautifully written by author and singer VV Brown and the powerful illustrations are the work of Kate Hazell.

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve written a book review and I feel naughty as this one has leap frogged the others that are waiting for me to finish, but I really wanted to make sure this gorgeous children’s book got your attention now so that it could make it on to your Christmas shopping lists as soon as possible.

Lily and the Magic Comb side page

Lily and the Magic Comb was an instant hit with my youngest daughter Rainbow, who instantly declared it her book when we unwrapped the post and has made me read it to her cover to cover 5 times in one night. The sign of a good book in our home.

Smashing their Kickstarter goal by over £2,000, the book was created to help fill the void in the children’s book market. You are more likely to find a book depicting an animal than featuring a black of ethnic minority character. More diversity in books is sorely needed. Lily and the Magic Comb is an exciting story of celebrating identity and self belief, which is important at any age, but even more so for the intended readers of this book, where minds are still incredibly impressionable.

This colourful children’s book is a welcome addition to our children’s book shelves and I think it would be a perfect gift for your children or the children in your life.

If you want to support independent retailers, or if you take part in Black Pound Day and would like to buy from a Black-owned business, I’d recommend you buying directly from Woke Kids Books. You can also buy the book on larger retailers such as Amazon.

Rainbow is just under 4 years old and this book kept her attention throughout. I would go as far as to say it would be suitable for all primary school aged children.

How diverse is your bookshelf? Do you need to add a broader range of books, characters and topics to your children’s reading list? Whatever the reason, I think this is a brilliant addition to your collections.
